Google Maps
GMail ist mir schon aufgefallen als eine Web-basierte Anwendung, die Inhalte per JavaScript nachlädt ohne die Seite komplett austauschen zu müssen. Genutzt wird hier das HTTP Request Object. Google Maps nun, zeigt wie weit das gehen kann. Während Map24.com noch 100% auf Java setzt scheint Google Maps komplett ohne Java auszukommen. Google Maps spielt zudem eine Stärke aus: die Suche. Es lassen sich Elemente in einer Karte per Freitextsuche finden (wie z.B. "Sushi in New York") - Map24 erlaubt lediglich die Suche von Adressen. Oliver Wrede | Forum

Macromedia Central
Macromedia veröffentlicht eine Vorschauversion von Macromedia Central, eine Flash-basierte Sherlock-ähnliche Webanwendung. Für meinen Geschmack ist wird der mögliche Lustgewinn für den Nutzer die die (lahme) Flash-Implementierung wieder zunichte gemacht. Wenn das in der finalen Version nicht wesentlich flotter läuft ist die Sache bereits tot. Genausowenig hat das Konzept eine Chance, wenn die Umsetzung vorhandener Inhalte mit hohen Kosten oder steilen Lernkurven verbunden ist. Wir werden sehen... Oliver Wrede | Forum

Etwas für Techniker: Die Anfänge des Internets verwendete man FTP, HTTP, SMTP und andere Protokolle zum transfer von Daten. Inzwischen ist die erste Generation darauf aufbauender Austauschprotokolle realisiert: XML-RPC oder SOAP sind z.B. Protokolle welche das HTTP als Transportkanal verwenden um Applikationen über das Internet miteinander zu verbinden. Wie so etwas aussehen kann zeigt die Applikation Watson - das Web erscheint in Zukunft also nicht mehr überwiegend in Form von HTML-Seiten, sondern in jeder beliebigen Form. Paul Prescod versucht die unmittelbaren Folgen dieser Entwicklung abzuschätzen, denn die entstehende Schnittstellenvielfalt erfordert "Verabredungsmechanismen", welche die Kopplung von Diensten einfach gestalten. Wer nur einen öffentlichen Terminal zur Verfügung hatte brauchte bisher für den Zugriff auf private E-Mail einen Account bei hotmail.com, gmx.net oder web.de - oder eine Unterstützung für den Browser-Zugang auf dem eigenen Mail-Server. Nun reicht ein einfacher IMAP-Zugang: Die Kanadische Firma SoftCom Technology Consulting Inc. bietet mit mail2web einen HTML-basierten IMAP-Client, der ohne Registrierung auskommt. Die Angabe von E-Mail und Passwort - wahlweise über eine SSL-Verbindung - erlaubt den Zugriff auf einen entfernten IMAP-Server und den dort lagernden E-Mails. Information Mapping wird hier vollmundig als "new technology" gepriesen, aber das Tool sieht ganz nett aus (habe es aber noch nicht getestet, Windows only). XNS - Identitiy Management Protocol
Nachdem Microsofts .NET-Strategie und die in diesem Zusammenhang publizierten Spezifikationen nun in der Entwicklergemeinde rezipiert wurden, stemmt man sich gegen die darin angelegte Monopolisierung der Service-Infrastruktur und entwickelt Alternativen. Ein wichtiger Schlüssel ist hier bei die "distributed authentification" - einen System also, welches einerseits die Authentizität eines Benutzers verifiziert (z.B. per Login) aber zugleich nicht zentral ist. Das Ziel ist, daß man als Endnutzer nicht für jede noch so kleine Dienstleistung einen eigenen Login erstellen muss, sondern daß man beim Besuch eines Internetangebotes die Authentifizierung über frei wählbare Dritte erledigen kann. Damit das funktioniert braucht es aber eine standardisierte Plattform als Alternative zur Microsoft-Lösung. Ein Vorschlag: XNS In short, XNS is an XML-based technology platform (which is why it's hard to understand - it's not just an application) for identity management, authentication, privacy control, automatically synchronized data exchange and other good stuff. It will be open source once I beat the developers into finishing up what's necessary to release it and we get the modifications to the Sun Industry Standard Source License that we need (I'm working with Sun on that, and they've submitted the revisions to the Open Source Initiative for approval). Der Internet-Suchdienst Google hat Deja.com, Anbieter von Informationen aus dem Usenet, uebernommen. Google stellt von nun an selbst eine Usenet-Suche unter http://groups.google.com/ zur Verfuegung. Der neue Dienst befindet sich derzeit noch im Beta-Stadium und soll entsprechend Google's Informationen in Zukunft um die 500 Millionen Nachrichten, die Deja.com seit 1995 archiviert hat, erweitert werden.
