Dieses kann zu weitreichenden Konsequenzen in Bezug auf die Darstellung führen. Wrong way to use CSS in page layouts

evolt.org: Unfortunately, many people are still using WYSIWYG packages to do their web development, and many of them are trying a table-free approach in their attempts to ride the wave of the CSS flood. 2002 SXSW Website Competition Finalists

Die Finalisten der SXSW Awards 2002 sind gelistet und können nun bestaunt werden.
Hintergrund:
Die SXSW ("South-by-Southwest") conferences (die dieses Jahr vom 8. bis zum 17. März in Austin Texas stattfinden) sind eine Mischung aus Kunstveranstaltungen, Konferenz, Messe und Ausstellungen im Gewerkedreieck Film, Interactive Media und Musik. Sie werden von der privatwirtschaftlich arbeitenden Firma SXSW Inc. organisiert und man startete 1987 mit einem Musikschwerpunkt, dem man vor sieben Jahren einen Film-Bereich und ein Interactive Festival hinzufügte.
Ich persönlich kann die Bedeutung dieses Festivals nur schwer einschätzen, aber der Liste der Projekte und der Referenten sowie der langjährigen Tradition nach zu urteilen, handelt es sich um eine der angesagteren Veranstaltungen in diesem Bereich in den USA.

Kölner Uni-Mitglieder schmähen Designer?

An der Uni Köln gibt es eine Mailingliste zum Web (für Kölner Hochschulen). Da wird gerade heftigst über die Internet-Präsenz der Uni Köln diskutiert. Am heftigsten zieht man hierbei über die Designer her - die offenbar sowieso zu nichts zu gebrauchen sind... Ich zitiere:
Design ist etwas für Leute, die sich mit Design beschäftigen. Punkt. [...] Es gibt keinerlei Veranlassungen für die Universität zu Köln, modernes und somit überflüssiges Design zu präsentieren. (Marcel Buelles)

THE WEB STANDARDS PROJECT'S (WaSP) Browser Upgrade Initiative (BUI), has spurred many a designer to move towards more Standards Compliant web design, using CSS rather than TABLEs for layout.
Funktioniert aber leider nicht im Netscape 4.7 unter MacOS (wie offensichtlich so vieles nicht was mit CSS gemacht wird).

Endlich hat jemand mal eine Aufstellung von verschiedenen Designelementen/Mechaniken und Interaktionsmuster für WWW-Seiten gemacht. Ich hatte selbst Ende Mai 2000 einmal eine Aufstellung versucht - etwas weniger systematisch und im Unmut über mangelnde Einsicht in das Problem bei CMS Herstellern. (Inzwischen habe ich begonnen z.B. dem Manila CMS von Userland mit einem eigenen Plugin auf die Sprünge geholfen.)

State of the Art Web Development

The ongoing Web revolution will inevitably bring about a revolution in development. This revolution will come about as OO classes and components are increasingly used to speed up overall data and process integration. Web programming tools using CORBA, Java RMI and EJBs, and XML-SOAP are already helping to bring this about. XML’s ability to facilitate application integration through open, automatable interfaces is also critical.
As these technologies reach critical mass, they will enable the new development methodologies that will arise in response to the needs of business and Web developers. As the differences between the business and Web developers converge in the quest for the six A’s, the current clash of cultures will be resolved.

Nicht überall, wo Lecture draufsteht, ist auch kritische Auseinandersetzung erwünscht, wie die Webdesign-Ausstellung Stealing Eyeballs belegt.
Webdesign ist eine junge Disziplin, die ästhetisches und publizistisches Einfühlungsvermögen gleichermaßen verlangt. Usability, Gestaltung, Content - über all diese Kategorien vermögen Experten auf diversen Werbeveranstaltungen trefflich zu parlieren. Findet so etwas wie eine Leistungsschau der digitalen Designvordenker statt, so erwartet der Besucher neben bloßer PS-Faszination zu Recht auch kritische Reflexion des eigenen Tuns - das sehen die Veranstalter der Vortragsreihe "Stealing Eyeballs" aber anscheinend anders. Deshalb disqualifizierten sie auf ihrer Homepage zwei unliebsame Vortragende, um zu verhindern, dass die Inkriminierten "weiterhin ein Forum erhalten, das sie nicht konstruktiv zu nutzen wissen haben," wie es in der Ausschlussbegründung blumig heißt. The problem with XHTML 1.0 isn't a matter of strength, or of importance. XHTML is both strong and important—and not just for markup snobs and hardcore developers. It's been a very long time since I was actually a fan of Helvetica, but the fact is Helvetica became popular on its own merits. Arial owes its very existence to that success but is little more than a parasite--and it looks like it's the kind that eventually destroys the host. To hell with bad browsers

In six month, a year, or two years at most, all websites will be designed with standards that separate style from content. (Or they will be built with Flash 7.) We can watch our skills grow obsolete, or start learning standards-based techniques now.
In fact, since the latest versions of IE, Navigator, and Opera already support many web standards, if we are willing to let go of the notion that backward compatibility is a virtue, we can stop making excuses and start using these standards now. (via alistapart)

Neu: Screenfont "Tenacity"; Erweiterung der "Mini7"

Wer gerne mit dem Screenfont "Mini 7" von Joe Gillespie arbeitet, (stark verkleinerbar und ohne Antialiasing gut lesbar) wird sich über seine Neuentwicklung "Tenacity" freuen. Dieser Font ist der Mini 7 sehr ähnlich, der Schriftsatz verfügt aber zusätzlich über Kleinbuchstaben und Sonderzeichen.
Ausserdem gibt es für die Mini 7 und die Tenacity endlich auch TrueType-Schriftsätze für Mac und PC (zu bestellen bei Kagi für 15 $). Die Tenacity gibt es dort ab dem 18.2.2001.
Den Schriftkoffer der Mini 7 für Mac kann man sich umsonst bei hi-type herunterladen.

Allen Beteiligten muß klar sein, daß es beim Aufbau der Webseiten vor allem um eines geht: die Gestaltung eines Kommunikationsmittels.
Dieser Leitfaden des Designzentrums Hessen stellt und klärt viele grundlegende Fragen, ist aber in seiner eigenen Umsetzung nicht 100%-ig überzeugend finde ich.

Macromedia Flash Usability

Macromedia nimmt die Diskussion über Usability und Flash ernst. Offenbar möchte man nicht, daß dem Produkt das Image des Spielzeugs verirrter Designer anhaftet und bemüht sich um einen "wohlgeformten" Umgang mit Flash.

Nielsen: Flash is 99% bad

Mein Kommentar: Dieses Mal hat Jakob Nielsen sich wirklich ein Ei gelegt. Ich liebe Flash auch nicht über alles in der Welt, aber die Argumente, die er hier anbringt lassen sich fast ausnahmslos stürzen. Daß nämlich Flash vom Inhalt einer Site ablenke, ist m.E. eben eine Designfrage. Es könnte ja sonst auch sein, daß es nichts gibt was zum Inhalt hinlenkt!

Open Letter to Jakob Nielsen (1999)

Clay Shirky sieht einige grundsätzliche Dinge im Bezug auf das Thema Webdesign gänzlich anders als Jakob Nielsen. In einem offenen Brief an Nielsen versuchte er schon vergangenes Jahr die ingenieurswissenschaftlichen Impetus in Nielsens Arbeit anzugreifen.
