heise.de: "Skype liefert kostenlos einen auf Peer-to-Peer-Technik aufbauenden Voice-over-IP-Client, neben Mac OS X auch für Windows, Pocket PC und Linux. Die Telefonate über das Internet zwischen Skype-VoIP-Clients sind kostenlos. Der SkypeOut genannte Dienst fürs Telefonieren mit Gesprächspartnern im herkömmlichen Telefonnetz startete Ende Juli. Hier fallen dann Gesprächsgebühren ab 1,7 Euro-Cent pro Minute an."

Mit dem kleinen und leistungsstarken Link-Checker-Tool 'Xenu´s Link Sleuth' können ganze Websites (auch lokal) auf fehlerhafte Links geprüft werden. Ein ausführlicher Bericht kann in Form einer HTML-Datei erstellt werden. Mit einigen Optionen kann die Prüfung sowie die Berichtausgabe angepasst werden. Umsonst und empfehlenswert (läuft jedoch nicht auf MAC).

Unter anderem gibt es Unterstützung für Weblogs (Blogger, MovableType und Radio Userland), so dass man mit Tinderbox diese Weblogs pflegen kann.<br/>Darüber hinaus wurde die Anwendung etwas beschleunigt - vor allem das Laden und Speichern sehr grosser Files geht nun wesentlich fixer. Es gibt eine Demo Version für OS X. Eine Version für WIndows ist nach wie vor in Arbeit.

Xtralean Software hat ImageWell 1.0 für MacOS X veröffentlicht. Das kostenlose Tool kann über ein kleines Icon in der Menüleiste aufgerufen werden. Dann kann man per Drag & Drop ein beliebiges Bild für die Übertragung auf eine Webseite vorbereiten. O'Reilly hat einen Artikel zur Installation und Verwendung von PEAR (PHP Extension and Application Repository) unter Mac OS X (10.2) veröffentlicht. PEAR gibt es seit 1999 und ist ein online-Verzeichnis von getesteten PHP Klassen, die strikten Codierungsstandards folgen und bisher nur über CVS erreichbar waren. Der PEAR Package Manager ist vergleichbar mit Perls CPAN oder dem Paketmanager Fink.

A distributed desktop is an idea that makes intuitive sense when you hear about it, but one that can become quite complex logistically. The desktop is more than just a file repository; it needs to be able to perform any number of activities, from providing support for window and widget APIs to protecting documents so that they can be worked on collaboratively. The desktop must be lightweight, because people are accessing the Web from devices other than just their computers. It needs to be extensible enough that people can build robust applications, yet simple enough that people don't have to be hard-core programmers to build these apps.
REBOL Technologies' Relative Expression Based Object Language (REBOL) Internet Operating System (IOS) products are an attempt to build precisely such systems. Adobe Altercast

Altercast ist eine Software von Adobe, die bestimmte Verarbeitungsschritte für Webgrafiken automatisiert. Skalierung, Textersetzung in Photoshop-Dateien mit anschliessender Ausgabe als JPEG (siehe AlterCast-Architektur). Die Demo-Versionen sind nach Registrierung für Windows und Solaris verfügbar.
Eine schon seit Jahren verfügbare Alternative im OpenSource-Bereich ist das ImageMagick. Für dieses Softwareprodukt gibt es inzwischen eine Vielzahl an Erweiterungen, welche die Integration in bestehende Content Management Systeme ermöglichen sollen.
Insgesamt kann man beobachten, dass inzwischen überall versucht wird dem Bedarf entgegengetreten. Scriptsprachen mit Bilderzeugenden und -manipulierenden Bibliotheken gibt es schon jetzt: z.B. PHP, Perl oder Python. Man direkt JPEGs, GIFs oder auch SWF-Files (Flash) erzeugen. Im Gegensatz zum Adobe Produkt wird hierbei allerdings Programmierung vorausgesetzt, die vielen Designern zu komplex (und anfällig) und manchem IT-Dienstleister als unnötiger Design-Ballast erscheint.

Userland hat für die Weblogger-Gemeinde die neue Version von Radio Userland fertiggestellt. Für $40 im Jahr erhalt man eine Software, die neben einer Objektdatenbank, einer integrierten Scriptsprache (nebst AppleScript Support) und einem integrierten WWW-Server auch ein "Personal Content Management" System beinhaltet.
Nicht unbedingt was für jedermann (Zitat: "Radio Userland is definatly on the Geek-end of the scale!"), aber interessant genug, um hier angekündigt zu werden.

Neue Version von SELFTHTML (8.0)

Den meisten dürfte der HTML-Kurs "SELFHTML" von Stefan Münz ein Begriff sein. Nun hat er - nach langer Ruhepause - eine neue Version veröffentlicht. Der Server von teamone scheint derzeit überlastet - die Datei gibt es daher als ZIP-Archiv (7 MB) auch hier.
Aber aufgepasst: Da der neue Server von teamone noch nicht läuft, werden einige Links in den Dokumenten noch nicht korrekt funktionieren.

Marc Liyanage hat einige der interessanten UNIX Pakete in das PKG-Format für MacOS 10.1 umgewandelt - was die Installation für Nicht-UNIXer erheblich erleichtert. Darunter ist z.B. ein PHP-Modul, das mit Type 1 Schriften umgehen kann, das Grafik-Manipulations-Paket ImageMagick, die Datenbanken MySQL und Postgres.

Apache Super Script v. 10.1

Auf der Suche nach dem geeigneten PHP Package für MacOS 10.1 stiess ich auf dieses Shellscript hier, welches eine komplettes Apache/MySQL/PHP-System unter MacOS X installiert. Es lädt alle Komponenten herunter, entpackt, kompiliert und installiert sie. Laut Dokumentation werden bereits installierte Versionen von benötigten Paketen verwendet. Das Script hat sogar Verbindungsprobleme zu einem Server erkannt und ein benötigtes Paket von einem Mirror heruntergeladen. Saubere Arbeit!

It is a slashdot-like engine. It is based on Apache/PHP3/MySQL (although PHP3 and MySQL will run with a different webserver).
I originally looked at Slash as a solution for me, but as I looked for hosting I only saw virtual hosting as my option. Therefore, I coded with virtual hosting in mind. There is no messing with cron jobs, messing with the permissions of files, no extra things to compile into Apache, PHP, or MySQL. If you can find a host that serves with PHP3 and MySQL and they'll make a database for you on MySQL (you usually have to ask for it anyway), the rest is pretty simple.

Der Produzent von Webdesign-Software und Flash-Hersteller Macromedia übernimmt den Websoftware-Spezialisten Allaire für die Summe von etwa 360 Millionen US-Dollar. Allaires Produktpalette richtet sich an den gleichen Kundenstamm; die Produkte ergänzen Macromedias Angebote aber eher, als dass sie eine direkte Konkurrenz darstellten. Allaire konzentriert sich in erster Linie auf die Applikationsserver-Plattform ColdFusion und das Webanwendungs-Framework Spectra, um insbesondere Kunden aus dem Bereich des E-Commerce plattformübergreifend zu schnellen Web-Präsenzen zu verhelfen. ColdFusion-Server gibt es für HP-UX, Linux, Solaris und Windows NT. (via heise)

Adobe hat die zweite Beta ihres SVG Viewers bereitgestellt. Mit diesem Plug-In für WWW-Browser, kann man vektorgrafiken im SVG Format anzeigen lassen. Leider ist im Internet Explorer für MacOS der JavaScript-Support für Plugins noch nicht implementiert, weswegen mit diesem Browser die interaktiven Beispiele nach wie vor nicht funktionieren werden.

Mac OS X: Last year's winner of the Vaporware Awards was Microsoft for Windows 2000, the oft-delayed update to Windows. This year, the crown passes to Apple, for Mac OS X, the oft-delayed update to the Mac OS.
M. Kaiser said the endless wait for a "decent operating system" from Apple has forced him to go over to the dark side.

Symantecs AntiVirus Research Center (SARC) hat den ersten (?) Virus entdeckt, der Serververzeichnisse nach .php und .html Dateien durchsucht und diese modifiziert. 'PHP-Pirus' befällt Server mit PHP-Interpreter und fügt in den genannten Dateien einen Code ein, der den Virus selbst wieder aufruft. Einen Befall der Browser von Surfern wird ausgeschlossen.

Clevere Programmierer haben Softwares veröffentlicht, um auch Barcodes von CD-ROMs, nahrungsmittelverpackungen etc. einzulesen und dann Informationen dazu über das Internet abzufrufen. Die Zope-Plattform wird dadurch sicherlich enorm gestärkt, denn Python ist eine inzwischen anerkannte Scriptsprache, die in der Internet-Entwicklergemeinde großen Zuspruch gefunden hat.

Nachdem die 'alte' Oberfläche von QuickTime (4) ja - wie ich finde zurecht - umstritten war, scheint bei der neuen Version wieder mehr die Interface-Stärke von Apple zum Tragen zu kommen. Der Screenshot sieht zumindest vielversprechend aus.

HTML widgets for Zope

Diese kleine Erweiterung für Zope erlaubt das editieren von HTML Text im HTML Text selbst. Funktioniert offenbar mit den neueren Browsern (IE5/Mac und Netscape6 und Mozilla). Scheinbar werden Interface-Elemente (Textfelder, Checkboxes, etc.) in DHTML simuliert, so daß man den Text sofort editieren und speichern kann.
Als HTML-Widget ist die Verwendung unter Zope auch relativ einfach.

SASH heisst eine Softwareentwicklung von IBM (siehe http://sash.alphaworks.ibm.com/), welche es gestattet vollständige Applikationen (nicht JAVA basiert) mittels weniger Interface-Definitionssprache (SashScript) über das Internet anzubieten (sog. Weblications).
Die Technologie basiert auf HTML und JavaScript und kann somit kommt daher denselben Sicherheitseinrichtungen aus. Die Portierung auf Linux zeigt, daß IBM es mit der Verbreitung dieser Technologie über den Windows-Bereich hinaus ernst meint.

Userland, Inc. - Macher von Frontier - hat ein neues Produkt im Betastadium. Derzeit nur unter Windows voll funktionsfähig unterscheidet es sich auf den ersten Blick nicht von einer Sparversion von Frontier oder dem Web-Outliner Pike. Tatsächlich handelt es sich um eine Art Jukebox Software mit dem User ihre Songlisten (sog. Playlists) mittels XML untereinander austauschen können.
Mar Orlygsson: "Making (potentially) millions of real-life playlists publicly avaliable may not seem much right now, but add to that feature such as detailed meta-information (mood, style, period, etc.) and you have a solid foundation of content to build on all sorts of 'radio' services, collaborative filtering schemes, community linking, etc."
