Internet-Radio Suchmaschine

Seit einiger Zeit bemühen sich einige eine Art "offenes Bürgerradio" auf Basis von abonnierbaren MP3-Files zu propagieren. Das Stiuchwort ist »Podcasting«. Es ist eine Wortschöpfung aus »iPod« und »Broadcasting«. iPod deshalb, weil einige eigens entwickelte Subskriptionsprogramme die heruntergeladenen Files ohne Zutun des Benutzers auf z.B. einen iPod kopieren. Auf diese Weise lädt man Nachts seinen iPod vollautomatisch mit aktuellen Soundbytes auf - um sie z.B. auf dem Weg zur Arbeit zu hören.
Jetzt gibt es podscope.com: eine Suchmaschine, welche die gesprochenen Inhalte der unzähligen »Podcasts« indiziert und durchsuchbar macht. Und plötzlich erscheint das Podcasting-Thema in einem völlig anderen Licht...

Hier ein knapper Artikel über die Unterschiede zwschen Data-, Content-, Information- und Knowledge Management, den ich besonders deshalb interessant (amüsant) finde, weil er eine sehr Technologie-zentrische, vom Nutzer abgewandte Sichtweise transportiert:
Knowledge requires the use of technology to derive facts and and assumptions that would not otherwise be immediately obvious. Knowledge can not be created simply by scrunging the data into new tables with different index configurations. It demands the use of clever algorithms that perform AI and other mining functions to come up with their results.

A topic map consists of a bunch of topics, and is often written in XTM. Or it can be kept in a database. Or written on paper. Or carved in stone, you get the idea. Apart from topics (like: "the play Hamlet"), it also contains associations (like: "the play Hamlet was written by the author Shakespeare.") And a topic map also contains occurrences. (Like: "At this URL: http://hamlet.com you can find a description of the play hamlet.")

Angefacht durch die Weblog-Tools entstehen immer mehr flexible und frei verfügbare Content Management Systeme. pMachine soll Ende des Monats erscheinen. Das System Movabletype hat sich binnen weniger Wochen verbreitet. Bricolage ist auch neu und scheint ebenfalls relativ leistungsfähig zu sein.

I have worked quite a bit with different page generation languages, in the context of a large financial web site, and I can tell you that the "separate content from logic from presentation" strategy is inadequate.
Instead, what you really want is separation of roles. In a typical commercial web site, there may be a large number of such roles: Artist, Infrastructure Developer, Business Rules Developer, Translator/Localizer, Security Specialist, Product Manager, Marketing Manager, Content Developer, etc.

What is needed is the HTML equivalent of Xerox's "Aspect-oriented programming" strategy, in which "cross-cutting concerns" are woven together from separate documents via an automated tool.

"Blogify your page" erlaubt es eine normale Nachrichtenseite in das RSS Format umzuwandeln, wenn man keine automatisierte RSS Ausgabe (wie z.B. in Manila) hat. Es wird nur ein span-Tag um jede Meldung benötigt.
Mit der RSS Repräsentation kann das eigene Weblog zur Quelle für viele News-Crawler werden.

Practical Knowledge Representation for the Web

Frank van Harmelen und Dieter Fensel haben untersucht, inwiefern sich die Webstandards HTML, CSS, XML und RDF dazu eignen um Quellen im WWW semantisch auszuzeichnen, so daß diese auch von Maschinen ausgewertet werden können. Interessanterweise kommen sie zu dem Ergebnis, dass das HTML-<SPAN>-Tag bereits einen Großteil der Funktionalität bereitgestellt hat, mit der man heute XML in Verbindung bringt. Darüber hinaus zeigen sich die Autoren enttäuscht darüber, daß auch neuere Standards ( XML , RDF ) den Anforderungen an eine semantische Auszeichnungssprache nur teilweise gerecht werden:
"Looking at the semantic side of these languages, [...] it is rather disappointing that also the new Web technologies ( XML , RDF ) fail to deliver, with little support for ontologies, and no support for inference."

E-Mail Harvester sind Suchmaschinen, die Webseiten nach E-Mail Addressen durchsuchen, um daraus E-Mail-verteiler für Spammer zu generieren.
Solche Suchmaschinen teilen in der Regel bei einem Request ihren Namen im "User-Agent"-String des HTTP-Requestes mit. Als Web-Server-Administrator kann man die "User-Agent" Informationen auf dieser Seite nutzen, um diese Harvesters zu blockieren.

In addition, Cycorp will, for the first time, provide the Cyc Inference Engine and a suite of tools for creating knowledge-based applications.

Der Computerwissenschaftler, dessen Organisation über die Standards und Protokolle im Web wacht, glaubt fest daran, dass die ans Internet angeschlossenen Geräte über das Web in Zukunft zunächst komplexe Informationen über Datenschutzansprüche oder Inhaltsvorlieben von Surfern austauschen, bevor die eigentlichen Kommunikations- oder Handelspartner überhaupt miteinander in Kontakt kommen. Harpoon von Allaire und Macromedia

Harpoon will offer developers a set of common user interface controls for Web applications built with Allaire ColdFusion and JRun servers. The toolkit is being previewed today at the 2nd Annual Allaire Developer Conference. Client-side interactions will be handled by the Macromedia Flash Player and passed back to the server, purportedly without the need for a page refresh. ColdFusion and JRun developers can integrate these pre-built components into applications and control them via CFML tags (in ColdFusion) or custom JSP tags (using JRun). Designers can customize the visual look and feel of the components using Flash 5.
Look for a free public beta to be released next month. The finished product is expected in early 2001 and will be free to developers to download from the Web sites of Macromedia and Allaire.

Es ist zu erwarten, dass das MySQL-Modul auch für die normale Mac OS Version engeboten wird, daher könnt man in Zukunft auch MySQL-Datenbanken mit Lasso über einen Mac-Webserver (wie. z.B. AppleShare IP oder WebStar) ins Internet stellen...
Lasso bindet zur Zeit vornehmlich FileMaker-Datenbanken an das Internet an.

Dieser hatte Tesh mittels Versprechungen zu einem über $200.000 Vertrag verleitet, die von der Software nicht erfüllt wurden.

Dave Winer - Präsident von Userland, Inc. - strengte schon 1998 eine Diskussion gegen das etablierte Hierarchie-Format in Websites an:
"My opinion of the killer app in web-based info flow.. Two primary views. One view answers the question "What's New?" and the other view allows you to search all the accumulated information.
What gets thrown away in this iteration is the idea of navigating thru the hierarchy to find what you want. For a variety of reasons, and I can show this to you this on lots of other websites, it doesn't work. Websites run by groups of people want to be much more disorderly. The rules of hierarchy stand in the way of getting the stuff up on the web. And even worse, they stand in the way of readers finding what they came to find."
